Top Upcoming FedHealthIT Events to Attend

As the summer winds down and proposal activity slows, growth minded professionals will be looking to attend Federal Health IT events in September and early October as a way to get a head start on FY 2017. Included below are a few events that you will want to consider putting on your calendar.

Standards and Prevention of Health IT Risks

WHEN: Wednesday, September 7, 2016, 9:00AM – 4:45PM
WHERE: NIST, Red Auditorium, Gaithersburg, MD

G2X TAKE: With an array of Clinical informatics and Health IT leaders from HHS, AHRQ, FDA, CDC and the Veterans Health Administration scheduled to speak, this is close to a must attend event for those focused on Health IT standards development process related to risk prevention and mitigation. Registration needs to be complete by August 31st.


How the ‘Rule of 2’ Is Being Implemented & Why It Changes Everything

WHEN: Wednesday, September 14, 2016, 4:00PM – 8:30PM
WHERE: Key Bridge Marriott, Arlington, VA

G2X TAKE: This event, with key note speaker Tom Leney, Director, VA Office of Small Disadvantaged Business Utilization, will focus on the fallout from the “Massive Acquisition Policy Changes at VA.” Register and plan to come early as this will be a packed event. HIMSS NCA Emergency Strikes – Is Your Health System Ready?  

WHEN: Thursday, September 15, 2016, 5:30PM – 8:00PM
WHERE: Key Bridge Marriott, Arlington, VA

G2X TAKE: This event with confirmed speakers from DHA, VA and several invited from HHS is a great way to kick start the new fiscal year. Whether this is a topic area of interest or not, HIMSS-NCA chapter events remain one of the must attend events for networking as they tend to draw in many of the top leaders from government and industry.


NCMA Woodlawn CMS Happy Hour and Networking Event

WHEN: Tuesday, September 20, 2016, 5:00PM – 7:30PM
WHERE: Columbia, MD

G2X TAKE: Rated as one of the top industry organizations to belong to from a business development perspective in this survey by FedHealthIT magazine, this every-other-month format that alternates between a planned session and social event allows members a more casual opportunity to engage with colleagues.

Initially founded by a number of CMS Executives, NCMA Woodlawn manages to attract both government and industry IT leaders and should continue to have great success as new entrants at CMS work to build their understanding of the agency and top issues, while making important connections.


2016 Healthcare Summit with CMS, VA and DHA

WHEN: Thursday, September 22, 2016, 7:00AM-12:30PM
WHERE: Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, McLean, VA

G2X TAKE: This lineup is starting to take shape. With VA Undersecretary of Health, David Shulkin; VA CIO, Laverne Council; CMS Deputy Administrator, Shantanu Agrawal, and DHA Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Karen Guice (invited) all scheduled to speak, this event is worth a look, although with the AFCEA Health IT day only a few weeks later (see below) and many of these speakers scheduled to speak at both events, many firms will need to pick and choose where to spend both their time and sponsorship dollars.


Advancing the Coordination of Health IT for Military and Government

WHEN: Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 5, 2016
WHERE: Mary M. Gates Learning Center, Alexandria, VA

G2X TAKE: With an agenda that includes speakers, Stacy Cummings, PEO Defense Healthcare Management Systems (DHMS); Deputy Director for the DoD/VA Interagency Program Office, Steve Schliesman and HHS Director for Federal Health Architecture, Gail Kalbfleisch, this event hosted by Defense Strategies Institute is and has always been one of the top multi-day events to attend in DC. Given the potential slate of speakers invited to participate, which include leaders from across the Federal Health sector, this is one event to have in your budget and on your schedule as we head into FY 2017.


MyVA Federal Advisory Committee – open to public

WHEN: Tuesday, October 4th, 2016
WHERE: VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System – Pittsburgh, PA

G2X TAKE: With top leaders from across VA in attendance, this session will focus on integration of the work in the five key MyVA work streams – Support Services Excellence (such as IT, HR, and finance), Veteran Experience, Employee Experience, Performance Improvement and VA Strategic Partnerships.

Pittsburgh may not be high on your list of places to attend anytime soon, but it is our understanding from other G2X members who have attended that these meetings provide great insight an access to some of the VA leaders who are driving this enterprise initiative.


AFCEA Bethesda Chapter Health IT Day

WHEN: Wednesday, October 12, 2016 6:45AM – 4:30PM
WHERE: Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road, Bethesda, MD
